In Bali, different types of gamelan ensembles use different scales and tuning systems; this in turn determines part of the fundamental character of each individual style.

SaluGambuh is one of my compositions born from the idea of combining different scales of different kinds of Balinese instruments, in ways that have never been done before. The instruments I use here are: the suling from the gambuh ensemble; the gambang from my Salukat; and the gender used in shadow puppet theater (gender wayang).

Dewa Alit Bali, Indonesia

Born in 1973 to a family of artists in Pengosekan village, Dewa Alit has been immersed in Balinese gamelan from early childhood and is generally acknowledged as the leading composer of his generation in Bali.

Seeking a wider path for expressing his approach to new music in gamelan, Alit founded his group Gamelan Salukat in 2007, performing on a new set of instruments of his own tuning & design.
