Bali has lost its cultural orientation. So much of the land, one of the most important foundations for its culture’s sustainability, has been sold to outsiders. Balinese people nowadays are trapped in the puddle of pop culture.

This composition is dedicated to reminding for ourselves that we should be aware of the important meanings of life in our relationship with nature and valuable culture.

Tanah Sedang Bicara/Land is Talking consists of 5 sections, that is: 1.Ciptaan dan Energi (Creation and Energy), 2.Kuasa Tanah (Land’s Power), 3. Yeh Akah (Root Water), 4.Yeh Ngetel (Dripping Water), and 5. Bongol (Not Hearing).

Land is Talking (a poem by Dewa Alit)

I translate my intention through this music
I believe this is what I most trust
Represent what deserves to be represented
Something we all possess
Hopefully useful to be shared

For a moment
When dreaming, some seeds enter between thoughts
Felt deeply inside, a feeling of strain makes a sound
Feeling my own heartbeat, spreading into tremors of the spirit
I remember, one drift in the wave of emotion
Return to the first second, though later it’s too late
What I feel, that is what makes the sound
Sensitivity sharpened by experience
Sometimes, nature calls

Sensitivity that languishes from refraction of imagination
Abstract scream, but humane
Careless assumption, heartbreaking and far from my identity
Bore anguish that worsens even more
Gathering of ideas, hinting at the final mockery from the nation’s coddlers
It’s something empty, but filled
It happens when a composer shits in his own room
Truly crazy, if we may say, this world

Dewa Alit Bali, Indonesia

Born in 1973 to a family of artists in Pengosekan village, Dewa Alit has been immersed in Balinese gamelan from early childhood and is generally acknowledged as the leading composer of his generation in Bali.
